Spain – a bloody civil war  Between 1936-39 Spain was locked into a bitter conflict which tore the country.  The world looked on aghast at  what became a dress rehearsal for the even greater conflict to come – World War II.

Madrid a city under siege  The battle for Madrid was at the very centre of the civil war.  Madrileños and anti-fascist volunteers from other countries – the International Brigades – fought to defend the city against General Franco’s army.  Our walking tours tell the full story of that epic struggle.

Hidden history  Despite its importance, the siege of Madrid remains a topic remains too sensitive for officialdom and the city offers no information for the intelligent, interested visitor.    Spanish Sites Madrid tours exist to fill that gap.  

Our Madrid walking tours are led by historian Dr David Mathieson who has lived and worked in the city for over 20 years.  David is the author of Frontline Madrid, a widely praised guide to the Madrid in the Spanish civil war with a preface by broadcaster Jon Snow of Channel 4 News.
